5 Signs It’s Time to Update Your Small Business Website

Your website doesn’t have to be brand new to work well for your business. But just like your business changes over time, your website should change with it.

Maybe you’ve added new services, changed your pricing, updated your branding, or simply outgrown the website you started with. And sometimes, you get so used to looking at your own site that you don’t realize it’s no longer doing its job.

So how do you know when it’s time for an update?

Here are five signs to look for:

1. Your website no longer looks like your business

Your branding may have evolved since your website was first created. Maybe you have a new logo, different colors, better photos, or you’ve simply figured out what you want your business to look and feel like.

When someone finds you on social media and then clicks over to your website, the two should feel like the same business.

If your website feels like an older version of your brand, it may be time for a refresh.

2. Your services or information are outdated

This is an easy one to overlook.

Are you still advertising a service you no longer offer? Have your hours changed? Are your prices outdated? Did you add something new that isn’t mentioned anywhere on your website?

Your website should make it easy for potential customers to understand exactly what you offer right now.

Take a few minutes every few months to look through your website like a customer would. You might be surprised by what needs updating!

3. It’s hard to use on a phone

Most of us are searching, shopping, booking, and browsing from our phones.

If your website looks great on a computer but requires someone to zoom in, scroll sideways, hunt for buttons, or deal with text that’s too small on mobile, you could be losing potential customers before they ever contact you.

A mobile-friendly website isn’t an extra anymore. It’s a must.

4. Visitors don’t know what to do next

This is one of the biggest things I look for when working on a website.

Once someone lands on your site, what do you want them to do?

Book an appointment? Request a quote? Shop your products? Fill out an inquiry form? Call you?

Whatever that next step is, it should be easy to find.

Clear buttons like Book Now, Get a Quote, View Services, Shop Now, or Contact Us guide visitors instead of leaving them wondering where to go next.

Sometimes improving a website isn’t about completely redesigning it. A few strategic changes can make a huge difference.

5. You’re embarrassed to send people to it

This might be the biggest sign of all.

If someone asks for your website and your first thought is, “Just ignore that part…” or “I really need to redo it,” it’s probably time. 😂

Your website should be something you’re excited to send potential customers to. It’s working for your business around the clock, often making a first impression before you ever have the chance to speak with someone.

And it doesn’t need to be overly fancy to do that. It just needs to be professional, easy to navigate, up to date, and feel like your business.

Your website should grow with your business.

You don’t always need to start over.

Sometimes your website just needs updated wording, new photos, better calls to action, a cleaner layout, or a few behind-the-scenes improvements. Other times, you really have outgrown your current site and a redesign makes more sense.

Not sure which one you need? That’s something I can help you figure out.
